Biscuits With Dates (Sanniyye bil Tamer)

This is a dessert made of pastry sandwich filled with date paste. I made this as a dessert for the family lunch, since I am now in the land of a wide variety of dates and from the best quality.

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams all purpose flour ( about 4 cups)
  • 250 grams softened butter
  • 2 tablespoons milk powder
  • 3 tablespoons icing sugar+ extra for sprinkling
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon of vegetable shortening
  • 1/4 cup of orange blossom water
  • 300 grams paste of dates (as in Maamoul recipe)

Preparation:

  • Preheat the oven to 180 C
  • Mix all the ingredients by hand until you have an even and soft dough.
  • Place half of the dough in a tray
  • Spread the paste of dates on top of the first layer of dough, then cover it wit the second half of the dough and bake in the oven for about 30 minutes or until the top becomes light golden color
  • While still hot, sprinkle the icing sugar on the top, cut into small pieces and serve cold

ET VOILA..C’EST TOUT..

  1. I will be making these before the end of the week……….how marvelous!

  2. These are beautiful!

  3. I do love anything made with dates. Very popular in California!

  4. Nina, do you have a favorite kind of dates? Here in Greece, I can get two kinds, the really sweet and hard kind that is cheap (I have no idea what it’s called but they’re not very good) or, if I pay 3x as much, what are called ‘royal’ dates in Greece and I think are called Medjool dates in English. I didn’t know they sold royal dates in my town until Monday – when I found them I bought 500g and am forcing myself not to eat more than 1/day because they are AMAZING. They’re about the size of my thumb, soft, black, and no added sugar.

This recipe looks like an amazing homemade version of the (unimpressive) American cookie ‘fig newtons’ which are very popular and which I loved as a child but never imagined I could make myself. How neat to be able to make them not only at home but obviously 1000x better!!

  5. Hi Heidi, there is a wide variety of dates in all shapes, colors, and tastes…..I found this link for you that might interest you. As for me, I am still visiting in the paradise land of dates! As you can imagine, it is found everywhere at a very reasonable prices and they are all delicious! I used Mejdool dates as they are always available! Enjoy… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_palm
